The Opportunity Class (OC) Placement Test is an entrance exam designed to identify high-achieving Year 4 students for placement in Opportunity Classes (OC) in Year 5 across New South Wales. Understanding the test format and scoring process is crucial for maximizing your child’s chances of securing a place.
This guide explains how the OC Test is scored, the test structure, and what parents and students need to know for 2025.
The NSW OC Placement Test consists of three sections:
Each question carries equal weight, and marks are only awarded for correct answers. There is no penalty for incorrect answers, so students should attempt every question.
The Opportunity Class Placement process does NOT use a fixed scoring scale. Instead, a scaled scoring system is applied after the test is marked.
Each student’s raw scores in Reading, Mathematical Reasoning, and Thinking Skills are converted into scaled scores to ensure fairness across different test versions.
🔹 No fixed cut-off scores exist since scores vary depending on the performance of all test-takers.
🔹 Scaled scores are combined to rank students for placement.
The Opportunity Class placement is determined by:
1️⃣ OC Test Score – The main factor in determining eligibility.
2️⃣ Reserve List & Offers – Students are placed in ranked order, and available spots are filled from this list.
3️⃣ No School Scores Are Used – Unlike previous years, school assessment scores are no longer part of the placement decision.
After taking the OC Test, students receive one of three placement results:
✔️ Placement Offer – Your child has secured a spot in an OC school.
🔄 Reserve List Placement – Your child is on the waiting list and may receive an offer later.
❌ Non-Qualification – Your child did not meet the cut-off for an offer.
Parents receive a Performance Report, which categorizes their child’s performance into percentiles rather than giving an exact score:
⏳ Waiting for an offer? Students on the reserve list may still receive a placement if spots open up.
